Kids Toys and The Gospel

There are many blessings and curses that exist within social media. I find that there are "good days" and "bad days" on my Facebook feed. There are days I am ready to delete the dang thing, but then there are days when I am extremely thankful I am able to gather the information that exists on that feed. Yesterday was one of those "good days".

I saw this article from Trevin Wax posted a few times from some of the people that I follow. The title of this article was, "'Dad, Look!' When Your Kids Invite You Into Your World". With my wife being a mental health counselor who loves to practice through the means of "play", articles like this have intrigued me even more. After reading this short blog post, I was lead to a few others that were really powerful.

I have often heard it said,  "When you have kids, they are entering your world - so get them on your schedule. Period.". Now I do not have kids of my own yet (Lord willing - someday), but I can't help but think that there needs to be a little more added to this statement. While the parents are correct in saying that their children will be entering their world, their schedule, and soon their family values - to an extent, the parents are also entering their children's world. Here is where the articles started to really resonate with me.

I had always known it was important to get down on the floor and play with your kids. Some of my fondest moments as a kid were playing power rangers with my dad or playing Nerf basketball downstairs in the basement while the Chicago Bulls played.  However, these articles helped me see the Gospel in parents playing with their kids.

In one of Trevin's articles, he quotes Zach Neilson, saying:

"I am continually reminded how much our kids need our undivided attention, on their terms, and not ours. This communicates volumes in terms of humble service which is the essence of the Gospel.

You want your kids to understand the Gospel? Get on the floor and play with them. Then when you speak of God coming down and condescending to our weakness they’ll have a picture of loving service to equate it to."

So I thought of all this, I thought I would simply share them so that others could glean this Gospel wisdom and insight as well.

"Dad, Look!" When Your Kids Invite You Into Their World

"I don’t want to be the dad of a passing glance. I want to enter the world of my children, just like God entered ours. I want to be a father who delights in the imaginary innovations of my children, just like God enjoys watching His children make something of this world He has given us." -Trevin Wax

5 Ways To Play With Your Kids This Christmas (still relevant today)

"I play with my kids, and hopefully then have a small notion of the great willingness and desire of God to be with His people. And as for me, playing with them – really playing with them – is another means by which God uses to pry my white-knuckled fingers off my idol of self." Michael Kelley
